Seville is a must-see in Spain and the number one destination to visit while in Andalusia. At the same time so close to France but so exotic, it is a destination that I loved to discover.
The advantage with Spain is that it is an easy to reach destination, no matter where you live in France. After 3 trips to Portugal this year, I decided to go to its neighbor: Spain, and more precisely, Andalusia. And it is true that Seville is both Spanish culture and some oriental influences that give it all its charm. So I took advantage of a 3-day weekend to explore the Andalusian capital and believe me, it will make you want to grab your plane tickets right away.
What to do in Seville?
For me, 2 whole days there are enough to visit Seville. At least I had time to do everything I planned. On the other hand, a trip to Seville can also be an opportunity to visit a part of Andalusia like Granada or Cordoba … In this case, plan at least a week there.
1. Stroll through the Spanish Steps
The famous, the grandiose, the mythical Plaza of Spain. I started my trip with this. Waking up at 6:15 am to arrive at sunrise and have the place to myself, it was total happiness. Admittedly, a survey so early will not be to everyone’s taste, but it remains a must-see. To be completely honest I think that’s my favorite thing about Sevilla. A real moment as I love them: the calm, the plenitude, the beauty of every detail and these two grandiose towers that surround the square. Anyway, you will understand, I took a slap.
This square was built for the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929, it was at the time of the most ambitious and expensive project of this exhibition … And we understand why! In the shape of a semi-circular arc, the square is over 200 meters in diameter and its area is around 50,000 square meters, or more than five football fields! As an anecdote, the Spanish Steps have been used as a backdrop for films such as Star Wars and The Dictator.
In this square you can also find the City Palace. It is quite the representation of Andalusian architecture: columns support the balcony, ceramics adorn the walls, wrought iron, wood, marble … It is a real feast for the eyes! Do not hesitate to take the stairs to climb to the top of the building and admire the view of the square, it is well worth it. All along the walls that surround the square, you can find benches where all the Spanish provinces are represented with its map, coat of arms and mosaics telling their story. A large canal also borders the palace. You can find small boats there to walk around … In short, I can’t tell you every detail of this place, I would have hours of it, but I really took my eyes off it. A pure architectural wonder.
2. Stroll around Parque Maria Luisa
Right next to the Plaza de España, you can find a huge wooded park: the Maria Luisa Park. These are actually the gardens of San Telmo Palace, which is located next door. This park is actually the largest in the city!
